Is the Guindais Funicular open? Not according to the latest information we read (suspension of 23 July 2026). It had already been closed from November 2023 to April 2024 for works.
Usual hours (before the suspension)
A guide dated 2026 gives, in summer (April-October), 8:00 to 22:00 Sunday to Thursday and until midnight on Friday and Saturday; in winter, 8:00 to 20:00 (22:00 on Friday and Saturday). It runs all night on 23-24 June and on New Year's Eve. These hours only apply if the service reopens.
Alternatives
- On foot, downhill: from São Bento station past the cathedral to the Ribeira, 10 to 15 minutes; going down is easy, coming back up is steep.
- By bus or metro: the metro to São Bento, then a short walk; see getting around Porto.
- For the view without stairs: the Gaia cable car, on the other bank, or the Dom Luís I Bridge.
Accessibility
With a pushchair or wheelchair, the closure makes the climb back up from the Ribeira harder; read wheelchair-accessible Porto and Porto with a baby.
To see the upper town
A guided tour of the old town spares you handling the slopes alone: visiting old Porto.
