Day 1: Ribeira and the historic centre

The Ribeira of Porto seen from the Dom Luís I bridge

Start with the Ribeira, the UNESCO-listed district on the Douro, early in the morning when the lanes are quiet. Then climb to the Porto Cathedral (Sé) for its azulejo cloister and terrace, and go down to the Stock Exchange Palace, whose guided tour leads to the Arab Room. Next door, São Francisco Church hides one of the most gilded baroque interiors in Portugal.

In the afternoon, cross the Dom Luís I bridge on foot by the lower deck, then come back by the upper deck for the view. If you prefer a more compact version, our Porto in one day itinerary covers the main stops hour by hour.

Day 2: Baixa, azulejos and bookshop

The azulejos of São Bento station

The second day revolves around azulejos and everyday life in the Baixa. Stop at São Bento station and its blue tile panels, then climb the Clérigos Tower for the view over the rooftops. Continue to the Livraria Lello, to be booked in advance, then let yourself drift along Rua Santa Catarina, the Bolhão Market and the Café Majestic for a break.

At the end of the day, the Carmo Church with its azulejo facade and the Chapel of Souls can be visited on foot from the Baixa. Have dinner in the Aliados or Cedofeita area, livelier than the Ribeira.

Day 3: Gaia, port wine and sunset

The Gaia cable car above the cellars

Cross to the south bank for the port wine cellars in Gaia. Limit yourself to one or two visits with a tasting, the morning being the quietest time. Then go up by the Gaia cable car or on foot to the Jardim do Morro, then to the Serra do Pilar monastery for the most complete view of Porto. If the weather is rainy, WOW – World of Wine easily fills an afternoon.

End with a sunset from the Morro garden or the Serra do Pilar esplanade, then cross back over the bridge for dinner in the Ribeira.

Variations by season and pace

Situation What we suggest
It is raining Day 2 first (bookshop, market, station) and WOW instead of the Day 3 walk
You like contemporary art Replace half a day with the Serralves Foundation
You like the ocean Add half a day in Foz (beach, fort, promenade)
Relaxed pace Visit just one monument per half-day and keep the evening for strolling

Getting around and booking

The centre is covered on foot, with steep climbs; the metro, the tram and the Guindais funicular (which links the Ribeira to the upper town) help avoid the slopes. Tickets for the most popular sites, such as the Livraria Lello and the Clérigos Tower, are best bought online in advance in season. For details, see our guide to transport in Porto.
