What is free in Porto

A large part of the city can be visited without a ticket:
- The Bolhão Market: entry is free, and it is open Monday to Friday from 8am to 8pm and Saturday from 8am to 6pm.
- Rua Santa Catarina and Rua das Flores: two pedestrian streets to explore on foot.
- The galleries of Rua Miguel Bombarda, generally free to enter: see Cedofeita and Miguel Bombarda.
- The Dom Luís I Bridge, to cross on foot: the view over the Douro costs nothing.

Transport: walk first
Central Porto is explored on foot, but the hills are steep. The occasional Andante Z2 ticket costs €1.40, a fare kept in 2026 while occasional tickets from zone Z3 went up. Andante 24 and Andante Tour (1 or 3 days) tickets were also revised in 2026; I could not confirm their current price: check the network's ticket office before buying. For details of the network, see transport in Porto.
Metro and bus are paid for with a rechargeable Andante card; only take a day pass if you plan several journeys.
Visits: what you pay for, what you can skip
| Visit | Price | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Livraria Lello | ticket-voucher | Value deducted from the price of a book; check the price on the official ticket site; free up to age 3 |
| Soares dos Reis National Museum | €10 | Full price according to the official order 13793/2024 (November 2024); confirm at the ticket office |
| Serralves Foundation | €24 (€20 for residents of Portugal, at the box office) | Official site, October 2026; free on the first Sunday of the month for residents of Portugal only |
| Miguel Bombarda galleries | free | Generally free entry |
Remember the rule: the Livraria Lello voucher is deducted from a book bought on site, so it is only a good deal if you want to buy. For museums, Sunday free entry has changed: since 1 August 2024 the "Acesso 52" scheme has replaced free entry on Sundays and public holidays in national museums, and it applies to residents. Do not count on free entry as a foreign visitor.

Eating for less
The restaurants in the Bolhão stay open until midnight Monday to Saturday, so you can have a late dinner without going to a touristy address. Prices are not shown on the market's information page; compare menus before sitting down. In a café, coffee (a cimbalino, an espresso) remains the simplest expense. At the Café Majestic, expect higher prices than in a neighbourhood café: keep it for a break rather than a meal.
Tips for saving
- Do paid visits one day at a time and book them online to avoid waiting.
- Choose accommodation near a metro station rather than on the Douro waterfront: see where to stay in Porto.
- Avoid terraces without displayed prices on very touristy streets.
- Pay in euros if a terminal offers to convert into your currency.
