Sandeman cellars in Porto: tour, prices, opening hours and tasting (2026)

Updated on October 25, 2026

The basic Sandeman cellar tour in Vila Nova de Gaia lasts about 50 minutes and ends with a tasting of three ports (white, ruby, tawny). The producer's own price is 23 EUR (1790 visit: 35 EUR), but sources disagree (Visit Porto shows 19 and 25 EUR), so check before booking. Open daily 10 am to 8 pm from March to October and 10 am to 6 pm from November to February, closed on 1 January, 24 June and 25 December (last entry one hour before closing).

Highlights

The classic tour (50 min)

The classic tour (50 min)

It walks through the cellars where port has aged since 1811 and ends with three glasses: white, ruby and tawny. It is the right choice if you only have an hour and want the house's famous black-caped silhouette.

The 1790 visit is longer (1 h 30) with five ports; the old tawnies visit, also about 1 h 30, pours four older ports. They cost clearly more (35 to 50 EUR depending on the source) and suit people who already know port.

Sandeman or Cálem?

Both sit on the Gaia quay, a few minutes' walk apart. Sandeman is shorter and more about the brand; the Cálem visit includes a museum-style exhibition (see the Gaia port cellars). One visit is enough: the three ports taste much alike from house to house.

Practical info

Tips

  • Book online, especially in summer and at weekends: cellar capacity is limited. With the Porto Card, Visit Porto lists a discount (10% from April to October, 30% from November to February, to be confirmed). For a single tasting with chocolate there is a one-hour option; to compare houses, read which Gaia cellar to choose. Prices change each season: these were noted in October 2026.

How to get there

On foot from the Ribeira across the lower deck of the Dom Luís I Bridge (about 10 minutes), or by the Gaia cable car. The cellars are at Largo Miguel Bombarda, Vila Nova de Gaia.
