What you see

The Sanctuary of Fátima

Fátima is a Catholic sanctuary born from the 1917 apparitions; the esplanade and basilica welcome pilgrims all year, especially around the 13th of each month. Entry is free; dress modestly. The Chapel of the Apparitions is the central stop.

Coimbra

Coimbra is a university city on the Mondego: the Old Cathedral (Sé Velha), the upper town and the university, whose Joanina Library is the most-cited paid attraction. The climbs are steep and on foot: bring good shoes. University and library tickets are usually not included in a tour; check the "included" line of the offer.

Distances and pace

Porto is about 120 km from Coimbra and about 180 km from Fátima. On a tour, the ride between the two cities is about 1 h 45 by bus according to one offer. Expect a day of about 10 hours with limited time at each stop: two stops in one day is a rush.

Group, private, train or car

  • Group: the cheapest, but time in Coimbra is short.
  • Private: flexible schedule, Joanina Library possible depending on the offer; more expensive.
  • Train to Coimbra: about 1 h 30 from Porto-Campanhã (times and prices on the CP site); you gain time in Coimbra but give up Fátima.
  • Rental car: total freedom, but city parking and tolls.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Meals, entrance fees and drinks: generally not included.
  • Departure: the meeting point varies by operator; check before booking.
  • Pilgrimage days: around 13 May and 13 October in particular, Fátima is very crowded.
  • Language: check the guide's language (Portuguese, Spanish, English and French are advertised by some operators).

Which offer to choose?

  • First time, mid budget: the group tour.
  • Family or group of 4 or more: the private day.
  • You like to take your time: the train to Coimbra.
  • You continue to Lisbon: the private transfer with stops.
