The Douro Valley, listed by UNESCO as the Alto Douro Wine Region, unrolls its terraced vineyards on both sides of the river, one to two and a half hours from Porto. You can visit by train, cruise, organised tour or car; the most beautiful line is the train that follows the river to Pinhão. For a single day, the simplest option is to choose an organised tour or to take the train to Régua or Pinhão and come back in the evening.
Highlights

The terraced vineyards
The Alto Douro landscape, where port wine and Douro wines are produced, can be seen from the train, a boat or the corniche roads. The best light is in the morning and late afternoon.

Pinhão and its quintas
A village in the heart of the valley, known for its station decorated with azulejos and for the neighbouring wine estates (quintas), many of which offer visits and tastings by reservation.
The Douro train
The line links Porto São Bento to Pinhão in about 2h20 to 2h30, with 5 or 6 trains a day; the one-way fare is between €15 and €17 depending on the source. The last return train leaves around 6pm. A historic train runs on certain Saturdays from June to October.
Organised tours
Day tours from Porto, with lunch, tasting and sometimes a cruise, are generally found between €49 and €75 per person.

Tips
- Train and tour prices come from guides and agencies, not from an official 2026 tariff: confirm the timetable and the line's operation on the CP website, as works closed the line between Porto and Régua from November 2025 to March 2026. For a shorter trip, see Amarante from Porto; to plan your stay, Porto in 3 days.
How to get there
CP train from Porto São Bento or Campanhã (about 2h20 to 2h30 to Pinhão); by car, allow about 1h30 to Régua. Organised tours leave from central Porto.
