Where the park is and how to get there

Peneda-Gerês National Park is Portugal's only national park, on the Spanish border, north of Porto. Allow about 100 km and 1 hour 30 by road to the southern entrance near Gerês, more if you want to reach Soajo or Lindoso in the north of the park. Several guides recommend a rental car, because the roads are narrow and winding; buses and trains exist, but they do not serve the waterfalls and remote villages. For the bus station and buses from Porto, see getting around Porto.

The small-group tour with picnic

This is the option most travellers pick: about 10 hours, departure around 7:30, hotel pickup, picnic included. It is rated 5.0 out of 5 from over 900 reviews on Pelago and 9.8 out of 10 on Expedia, two sites that resell the same departure; reviewers praise the guides and the group size. The exact stops change with the weather and park conditions: ask your guide. See the offer.

The tour with kayaking

The listing describes a day in a Land Rover with kayaking on the Caniçada reservoir, lunch and a short walk to a waterfall, with about 1 hour 40 of driving each way. It is not suitable for people with back problems or reduced mobility. Choose it if you prefer activity to sightseeing. See the offer.

Canyoning and full-day hikes

The platforms also list canyoning (about 6 h, from $84 according to the listings) and hike-and-swim days (about 9 h 30, from $74). These are for fit walkers; check the level required on the listing.

What you see in the park

  • The Arado waterfall: a short, well-marked trail leads to it, with pools where you can swim. Hiking guides also mention a longer loop of around 15 km, of medium difficulty.
  • Soajo and Lindoso: two villages known for their espigueiros, granite granaries on stilts. Lindoso is about 26 km from Ponte da Barca, and Soajo about ten kilometres from Lindoso.
  • The Tahiti and Arado waterfalls: the water stays cold even in summer.
  • Mezio: a dolmen and rock engravings about 14 km east of Arcos de Valdevez.

When to go

Spring (April to June) and autumn (September-October) are the best seasons for walking, at 15 to 20 °C. Summer suits swimming in the pools, but weekends are busy. One article mentions a €1.50 per-car fee at the Mata de Albergaria, from June to September between 11:00 and 18:00; this comes from a single source, so confirm it with ICNF before driving there.

How much time to allow

A day from Porto lets you see a few waterfalls and a village, but guides advise two to three days to really walk. If you stay overnight, Caldas do Gerês in the south is the best-served base; Soajo in the north is quieter. In summer and at weekends, rooms go fast.
