The two towns in brief
Viana do Castelo is a seaside town at the mouth of the Lima, overlooked by the Santa Luzia sanctuary. You go up by funicular (about 650 m, 160 m of height difference, 6 to 7 minutes) from the station; the price of about €3 return comes from an article of uncertain date, so check on site. Ponte de Lima is a small stone town around its Roman bridge, billed as the oldest town in Portugal.

By train, car or tour
The Porto–Viana do Castelo train (CP) takes roughly 1 hour 10 to 1 hour 35 depending on the service, with connections at Nine for some departures and reduced timetables on Sundays and public holidays. Check cp.pt for current times and fares. We found no reliable information about a practical link to Ponte de Lima: to get there, a car or a tour is the safe option. For transport from Porto, see getting around Porto.
The private tour: Viana, Ponte de Lima and Valença
The listing describes a drive of about an hour from Porto, a visit to Viana, the Santa Luzia sanctuary with its 360° view, lunch in Ponte de Lima and the medieval fortress of Valença do Minho. One traveller found the outing expensive for a solo traveller: the offer makes most sense for several people, since the price is per group. Pickup is at your hotel in central Porto or in Gaia. See the offer.
The private tour: Viana and Ponte de Lima
A version centred on the two towns, with the same principle: a private vehicle, a driver-guide, lunch in Ponte de Lima. Check the price and duration on the listing. See the offer.
The guided walking tour of Ponte de Lima
If you are already in the area, the 1 h 30 small-group walk costs about $35 and covers the old centre and the bridge. See the offer.

How to organise the day
Start early: in Viana, go up to Santa Luzia first for the morning light, come back down to the centre for lunch, then head to Ponte de Lima in the afternoon. If you take the train, allow five to six hours on site for Viana alone. With friends or family, the per-group price of the private tour becomes attractive.
