How to get from Leixões to the centre
| Option | What sources say | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Cruise-line shuttle | Varies by line: some go all the way to Porto, others only to the port gate; a €12.90 return fare was quoted (older) | The easiest |
| Taxi | About 16 minutes and €12 to €15 (estimate) | Small groups |
| Metro | Matosinhos Sul stop about 250 m to a 15-minute walk from the port, then about 30 minutes; ticket about €2 (guides, to check) | Tight budgets |
| Bus 500 | Stop near the port entrance | Independent travellers |
| Organised excursion | Return to the ship handled | Anyone worried about missing departure |
How much time should I allow? About half an hour each way. Be back on board at least an hour before departure, or by your cruise line's deadline.
An 8-hour plan
- Ribeira and the river: arrive on the Douro, see the Ribeira guide and the Dom Luís I bridge.
- São Bento and the centre: São Bento station and its azulejos, then the Lello bookshop (book a timed ticket).
- Gaia: cross the bridge, taste a port in one of the Gaia cellars and come back by cable car.
If you prefer a single activity: the six bridges cruise lasts about an hour.
Excursions from the ship
On GetYourGuide, excursions starting from Leixões include: a private tuk-tuk tour of about 3.5 hours (from about $100), a 5-hour six bridges cruise with pier pickup (about $80), a small-group half-day tour (about $67) and a 6-hour "heart of the city" excursion (about $58). Prices change: check them and the return time on each listing.
Practical tips
- Check the all-aboard time on your port schedule.
- Carry euros or a card: cash machines are plentiful (see paying in Porto).
