| Criterion | Baixa and Aliados |
|---|---|
| Transport | Aliados and São Bento metro stations, São Bento train station on foot |
| Strengths | Everything on foot, many restaurants, good for a first stay |
| Weaknesses | Night noise, small rooms, higher prices at weekends |
Why choose this area
It is the most practical area for a first stay of two or three days: the Avenida dos Aliados leads to São Bento station and its azulejos, and the metro serves the airport without a complicated change; check the line on the official map.
Noise and hills
Ask for a courtyard room or a high floor if you worry about the noise from the nearby streets, especially at weekends. The streets down to the Ribeira are steep: with a pushchair or a large suitcase, expect detours.
Baixa or Cedofeita?
For fewer crowds and galleries, see Cedofeita and Bolhão. For a different style, see Ribeira hotels.
Four hotels worth knowing
Facts read on 29 October 2026 on the hotel's own site for the first and on Booking's list for the others; scores and rates change.
- Mercure Porto Centro Santa Catarina: 4 stars, Praça da Batalha 116; the site gives the metro station at 200 m, São Bento station at 200 m and the Bolhão market at 800 m, with breakfast from 7:00 to 11:00, air conditioning and wifi. Limit: the description says 7 minutes on foot from São Bento, so measure on the map.
- Axis Porto Club Aliados: rated 9.1 from 2,475 reviews on Booking, a short walk from São Bento station. Limit: the list gives no star rating, so check the facilities.
- The Editory Boulevard Aliados Hotel: 5 stars, 9.0 from 1,758 reviews, the Clérigos tower and the Palácio da Bolsa within a kilometre. Limit: higher budget.
- Gharb: 9.4 from 1,084 reviews, steps from the Clérigos tower. Limit: very busy area, star rating not stated.
Practical tips
- Check the exact distance between the hotel and São Bento or the metro station.
- Read recent reviews about noise before booking.
