What is a rabelo?

The rabelo is a flat-bottomed boat with one square sail and a long steering oar, built to carry wine barrels from the upper Douro vineyards to Vila Nova de Gaia, where the wine ages. Dams and road transport ended that trade; several port houses keep a rabelo or two with their name on the sail facing the Ribeira as advertising, and looking at them from the Gaia quay costs nothing.

Rabelo or six bridges cruise?

Most departures from the Ribeira are six bridges cruises: you pass under the bridges linking Porto and Gaia, with an audio guide, on an ordinary sightseeing boat. Some operators use a rabelo-style boat; the listing says so, and if it does not, expect a modern boat. Longer trips towards Pinhão or Régua take a full day and often return by bus: see the Douro river cruise.
