The week-long cruise: what it really is
Hotel boats go upriver from Porto to Régua, Pinhão and sometimes Barca d'Alva on the Spanish border, with winery visits and stops such as Casa de Mateus. A CroisiEurope itinerary seen on a reseller site (6 days on the MS Miguel Torga, Porto to Leverinho, with a Salamanca excursion) showed from about $1,550; that is a reseller price, not the line's own, and it changes with the date. The river is navigable thanks to several dams with locks, including Carrapatelo, one of the highest locks in Europe, and the passage is part of the show. The plus: you unpack once. The minus: the boat is slow and you see less of Porto.
The day cruise: the simplest
