The options at a glance

By plane

The direct flight is the fastest. Count the trip to Porto airport, check-in and security: the time saved over the bus is still about three hours. Hold luggage is extra with a low-cost airline: compare the final price. For the airport, see From Porto airport to the centre.

By bus

The bus links Porto (Campanhã coach station) to Madrid (the South coach station, according to a comparison site). Journeys last about 6 hrs 40 to 8 hrs. It is the cheapest option, but it does not suit you if you have only one day in Madrid. Book ahead for low prices.

By train

There is no direct train we could confirm: comparison sites show about 8 to 9 hours with changes. Check the Renfe and CP websites before counting on it.

By car

Allow about 6 hours non-stop; check on your navigation app. Tolls and the fee for returning a rental car in another city can be costly: compare before booking. A private transfer with stops is another solution for a group: see our comparison Lisbon from Porto: train or excursion.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Comparing the ticket price without luggage: low-cost adds extras.
  • Forgetting the trip to the coach station or airport: it counts in the real duration.
  • Taking a tight schedule: allow a margin, especially by bus.

Which option to choose?

  • You are short of time: the direct flight.
  • You have a small budget: the bus, booked ahead.
  • You travel in a group with stops: the car.
