First: your current plan
Portugal is part of the European Union: plans taken out in an EU country benefit from roaming "like at home", within each operator's conditions (fair use). Check your contract for the data allowance abroad. Outside the EU (UK, Switzerland, United States, Canada), ask your operator for its rate or take a local solution.
The three options
| Option | Advantage | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Your operator's roaming | nothing to do | costly outside the EU; fair-use limit within the EU |
| Travel eSIM | installed before departure, active on landing | compatible, unlocked phone; often data only |
| Portuguese prepaid SIM | local number, calls and texts | bought on the spot; ID may be requested |
The travel eSIM
It is installed by scanning a QR code before departure. Check that the offer really covers Portugal (and not just a partial "Europe" zone), the data volume in GB, the validity period and what happens when the data runs out. A "data only" eSIM is enough for maps, WhatsApp and ride-hailing apps; it gives no Portuguese number for ordinary calls.
The Portuguese SIM card
It is bought in the shops of the operators MEO, NOS and Vodafone, in the city and at the airport. Use an official point of sale. Your phone must be unlocked. Keep your original card, as many banks send payment codes by text.
Wi-Fi
Hotels, cafés and many restaurants in Porto offer Wi-Fi; quality varies. Avoid banking on public Wi-Fi. To arrive stress-free, download the Porto map offline and note your hotel address (see from the airport to central Porto).
What to choose?
| Your situation | Recommended solution |
|---|---|
| EU plan | your current plan, after checking |
| Weekend outside the EU | travel eSIM |
| Long stay or need to call | Portuguese SIM card |
| Hotel Wi-Fi and offline maps | no purchase |
