The official ticket
The bookshop is open every day from 9:00 to 19:30, and closes on some public holidays. Online tickets are sold until 30 minutes before closing, subject to availability, and the voucher stays valid for 60 minutes after the chosen time. The price is not shown on the information page: check the official ticket site for the price of the day. On site you can also buy with your phone in the queue; cash is not accepted there. For the full page on the bookshop, see Livraria Lello.
The GetYourGuide ticket
The GetYourGuide entry ticket shows prices that vary by page and date: about $18 per person for the bookshop alone in our checks, more with the Foundation option. The page is rated about 4.0 out of 5, lower than other Porto tours: reviews praise the interior and the voucher credit toward a book, and complain mostly about crowds. Read the conditions: some variants are non-refundable, and the voucher is tied to a specific queue.
The Lello Foundation option
The Foundation is at the Leça do Balio monastery, about 8 km from the centre; transport is not included. It is only worth the trip if you love old books and have a way to get there. For a first visit, the bookshop-only ticket is enough.
The walking tour that includes the bookshop
The Porto walking tour with bookshop, cruise and cable car bundles several stops in one booking. It is handy for a first day, less so if you want to linger in the bookshop. See the Gaia cable car.
Pitfalls
- Voucher value: it is deducted from a book bought on site; according to traveller reviews, only books from the Lello publishing house count. Ask before you choose.
- Crowds: the fixed slot helps, but crowds are the most frequent complaint in reviews; do not expect to be alone in the bookshop.
- Harry Potter: no official link with the saga is confirmed.
- Children: entry is free up to and including age 3, with proof of age.
- Priority access: provided for people with reduced mobility, over-65s, pregnant women and people with an infant.
Which offer to choose
- Budget and simplicity: the official ticket, in advance.
- Free cancellation or a single payment: a reseller's ticket, after reading the conditions.
- First day in Porto: the walking tour that includes the bookshop.
- Old-book lover: the Foundation option, with transport at your own expense.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need to book Livraria Lello? Yes in summer and at weekends: slots fill up, and a ticket is required anyway, even to buy a book.
What time should you go? At opening at 9:00 or late in the day; crowds are heaviest in the middle of the day.
Is the ticket refunded if I buy a book? Its value is deducted from the price of a book bought on site.
Can I arrive late? The voucher stays valid for 60 minutes after the chosen time, not beyond. Combine it with the Clérigos Tower, a short walk away, or read Porto in one day.
