Coimbra from Porto: university, Joanina Library and old town (2026 guide)

Updated on October 24, 2026

Coimbra, about 120 km south of Porto, is Portugal's great university city: the university, on its hilltop since the 16th century, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (Alta and Sofia, 2013). The train from Porto-Campanhã takes roughly 1 hr 10 to 1 hr 30 depending on the service, and the city fits into one full day. The star visit is the university circuit (Paço das Escolas, Joanina Library, São Miguel chapel). The sources checked in October 2026 give different prices (around 13 to 18 € for the full circuit): confirm the price and book your slot on the university's official site before you go, because entry to the library is limited to timed slots.

Highlights

The Joanina Library

The Joanina Library

An 18th-century baroque library with gilded woodwork and some 60,000 old volumes. Visitors go in by groups at set times: this is the part to book first, and photography inside is not allowed.

The upper town and the old cathedral

The upper town and the old cathedral

The Sé Velha, a 12th-century Romanesque cathedral, stands on the climb up from the Baixa. Walk up through the Arco de Almedina and the lanes: it is steep, but it is the best route.

The Santa Cruz monastery

In the lower town, it holds the tombs of Portugal's first two kings, and a church worth an hour if you have it.

Coimbra fado

Plainer than the Lisbon kind and traditionally sung by men, it is performed in the evening in a few venues in the lower town: book ahead.

Hours and prices

University opening times vary by season and sources disagree: check the official visiting page before you go. University tickets are usually not included in a group excursion.

Practical info

Tips

  • Go on a weekday and book a library slot as soon as you know your date. Wear good shoes: the upper-town streets are steep and cobbled. To combine Coimbra with Fátima in one day without driving, read our guide Fátima and Coimbra from Porto. For another day trip, see Aveiro or Guimarães. Prices and hours to be confirmed on the university's site.

How to get there

Train from Porto-Campanhã to Coimbra-B station (about 1 hr 10 to 1 hr 30 depending on the service). Coimbra-B is away from the centre: a short rail shuttle runs to Coimbra-A, by the river, a few minutes from the lower town. Check on the CP website that your ticket covers this shuttle.

Opening hours

Best: Weekday mornings
Depends on the season, see the university's official site (Joanina Library: entry by timed slots)
