Felgueiras Lighthouse in Porto: the pier, the sea and the Foz walk
The Felgueiras lighthouse (farolim) marks the mouth of the Douro, at Foz do Douro, at the end of a pier about 100 m long. Built in 1886 (the jetty was begun in 1790), altered in 1916 and 1945, automated in 1979 and deactivated in 2009 according to Wikipedia, it is listed as a building of municipal interest. The inside is closed; the pier is free and open, but dangerous in rough weather.
Highlights

The pier and the lighthouse
The lighthouse stands at the end of the jetty, facing the Atlantic. Waves sometimes break over both piers: one source warns of the risk of being swept away.

The sunset
The sun sets over the ocean from the end of the pier; it is one of the most photographed spots in Foz.
The walk to Praia da Luz
From the lighthouse a seafront promenade leads to Luz beach in about ten minutes.

Tips
- Look at the sea before walking out on the pier, and keep back when waves are coming over. Combine it with the nearby São João da Foz fort and the Foz do Douro guide. To see the river mouth from the water, a late-day cruise leaves from the Ribeira.
How to get there
Foz do Douro is about 6 km from the centre: the historic tram or a bus from the centre, or a taxi. The pier is at the end of the Foz promenade.
