The Serra do Pilar monastery crowns the hill overlooking Vila Nova de Gaia, just south of the Dom Luís I bridge. Founded in the 16th century by Augustinian canons, it is known for its circular church topped with a dome and its round cloister, a rare layout in Portugal. With the historic centre of Porto and the Dom Luís I bridge, it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site listed since 1996. But many visitors come mainly for the outdoor esplanade, from where the view of the bridge, the Ribeira and the rooftops of Porto is one of the most complete in the city, especially at sunset.
Highlights

The esplanade facing Porto
In front of the monastery, the forecourt opens onto the Douro, the double-deck bridge and the whole north bank. It is a free place to stroll, less crowded than the neighbouring Jardim do Morro, and lets you watch Porto light up as night falls.

The round church and its dome
The church, circular in plan, is one of the most singular monuments in the city: its dome is visible from Porto and serves as a landmark on the south bank. The round cloister around it follows the same geometry.

A place of military history
During the Peninsular War, in 1809, Wellesley's British troops used it to cross the Douro and retake Porto from the French. The monastery also served as a fortified position during the siege of Porto in 1832-1833.
The neighbouring garden
A few steps away, the Jardim do Morro extends the free view towards the sunset, but with more people and activity.
Opening hours and prices
The esplanade is accessible at all hours. The church and cloister are visited on guided tours at slots set by the Direção Regional de Cultura do Norte, with a modest entrance ticket: hours and opening days change, so check the notices on site before going up.

Tips
- Come about an hour before sunset to choose your spot and enjoy the golden light on the Ribeira; there are few benches, so bring something to sit on. The official ticketing portal of Portuguese cultural heritage states in October 2026 that the monastery is "temporarily closed due to requalification works": the esplanade remains the reason to come. Before climbing the hill for the interior, check for reopening on that portal, as it is steep from the quay. The metro and the cable car avoid the climb.
