Jardim do Morro: the Best Sunset View in Gaia

Updated on October 18, 2026

The Jardim do Morro is a small terraced garden at the top of the Vila Nova de Gaia hill, at the south end of the upper deck of the Dom Luís I bridge. From there, Porto spreads out in front of you: the Ribeira, the cathedral, the Clérigos tower, the iron bridge. Access is free at any hour, with no ticket. In the late afternoon, locals and visitors settle on the lawns and steps to watch the sun set behind the north bank, sometimes with street musicians. It is the easiest viewpoint to reach from Porto, on foot, by metro or by cable car.

Highlights

The view over the Ribeira

The view over the Ribeira

From the garden wall, you take in the river, the Ribeira and its coloured facades, the Sé hill above. At the end of the day, the sun goes down to the left of the bridge: the golden light lights up the houses.

The garden itself

The garden itself

A small lawn, a few trees and a ramp surround the roundabout where the bridge ends. The place is more a viewpoint than a garden: you come to look, sit and take your time.

Turn your back on Porto and the view plunges onto the roofs of the south bank and the Serra do Pilar monastery, whose dome stands next to the garden.

The bridge from the upper deck

The two-level Dom Luís I bridge can be crossed on foot or by metro. The upper deck is about 60 metres above the water; those who dislike heights may prefer the lower deck.

Opening hours and prices

Garden freely accessible at any hour. No ticket. The restaurants and cafés nearby keep their own hours.

Tips

  • Arrive an hour before sunset: the best spots go early in summer, when the garden fills up, with a party atmosphere. Bring a jacket in winter, as the wind blows along the ridge. In the evening, keep an eye on your belongings in the crowd. To go back down to the quay, take the cable car or the steps towards the cellars.
