Pinhão, Régua or a quinta?

Pinhão is the most charming village in the valley: a small station with azulejos, quays on the river, restaurants and quintas a few kilometres away. Peso da Régua is the main town, more functional, with more hotel choice and generally gentler prices. A quinta is a wine estate that lodges guests: the most beautiful setting, but plan on a car or being picked up.

Getting there from Porto

The Douro line train takes about 1 h 50 to Régua and 2 h 20 to 2 h 30 to Pinhão according to guides; check the timetables on cp.pt, which vary by day. It is the most beautiful route and avoids a car. Some hotels advertise a shuttle from the station (on the Quinta Nova listing, for example) or pick-up by the hosts: ask before booking. For the day trip instead of a night on site, see the Douro Valley from Porto and the Douro Valley page; one much-booked offer is the excursion with boat, tasting and lunch.

Places to stay in and around Pinhão

  • Quinta Nova Winery House: a wine-estate hotel listed as Relais & Châteaux according to its listing, with a free shuttle from the station for guests arriving by train. Upscale.
  • Quinta de la Rosa: a working wine estate on the right bank of the Douro, with a possible walk to Pinhão. Ideal for tasting the estate's wines.
  • Casa de Casal de Loivos: a guesthouse in a 17th-century manor above the valley. Very well rated by travellers; an intimate address for a couple.
  • Quinta da Galeira: a house to rent with a kitchen, pool and games room. Travellers note the hosts drove them to the station. Practical for a family or friends.
  • The Vintage House: a hotel in a former 18th-century wine estate overlooking the vines in Pinhão. The search brings up its page.

When to come

The harvest (September and October) is the most in-demand period: book very early. Summer is hot and dry; in winter the valley is quiet, with golden vines in November (see Porto in winter). Quinta hotels sometimes close or cut activity in low season: check that the property is open for your dates.

Pitfalls

  • Distances. Quintas are several kilometres from stations: car, taxi or shuttle.
  • Roads. Valley roads are winding; do not plan too many stops.
  • Tastings. If you drive, appoint a driver or take a transfer.
  • Price. The valley's luxury is expensive and rooms go early at harvest time.

Combining with Porto

End the stay with a night in Porto before a flight or train: see where to stay in Porto. For a stop in between, Amarante lies on the way to the valley.
