The choice at a glance

Porto side: the Ribeira and around

Sleeping in the Ribeira means opening the window onto the quays and the rabelo boats. The downside: the area is busy until late, the lanes are steep and cobbled, and the priciest view is the noisiest. Our neighbourhood guide: the Ribeira.

  • Pestana Vintage Porto: five stars on Praça da Ribeira, in a historic complex in the World Heritage area. It is the most central and the most expensive of the list.
  • Hotel Carris Porto Ribeira: four stars in a refurbished building overlooking the river. Its listing offers several room categories with a view of the Douro, some with a terrace.
  • Eurostars Porto Douro: four stars facing the river, near the Dom Luís I Bridge and within walking distance of the Ribeira. Some rooms look onto the water; specify it when booking.
  • Vila Galé Porto Ribeira: at Cais das Pedras, a little west of the most touristy quays. The listing offers rooms with a river view; one guest notes that the window is high and hard to see out of when seated. A good compromise for peace and quiet.
  • Panorama Apartments Ribeira and Porto Premium River View I: apartments rather than hotels, with a kitchen, handy for a multi-night stay. Read the arrival conditions, as there is not always a reception.

Gaia side: the head-on view

From the south bank you see the whole Ribeira, the Dom Luís I Bridge and the cathedral hill: the view everyone photographs. The price is the climb from the quays, or the detour over the bridge to reach the centre (see where to stay in Vila Nova de Gaia).

  • The Yeatman: a luxury hotel on the Gaia hill, whose listing says every room has a view of the Douro and Porto. This is the address for a special occasion.
  • Vincci Ponte de Ferro: four stars right by the bridge, handy for walking across to the Ribeira. Ask for a river-side room.

How to choose

  1. Your budget. For a direct river view with comfort, expect clearly more than for a city-centre hotel; rooms without a view are often much cheaper in the same hotel. Prices to be checked for your dates.
  2. Noise. The Ribeira is lively late, especially in summer and on São João night (see São João in Porto). In Gaia, the upper streets are quieter.
  3. Slopes. Gaia and the Ribeira are steep: check the real walking distance with your luggage.
  4. The real view. A "river view" room can be a corner of a window. Look at travellers' photos on Booking before paying a supplement.

To compare the central districts before choosing, read where to stay in Porto. For another view without sleeping there, the Jardim do Morro is free.

If you cannot find a room

Widen the search: all stays in the Ribeira on Booking. Book early for São João, summer and New Year.

Frequently asked questions

Should you sleep on the Porto side or the Gaia side for the view?

The Gaia side to see the Ribeira head-on, the Porto side to be in the atmosphere of the quays. The Gaia view is calmer.

Does a room with a Douro view cost much more?

Often yes, the "river view" category costs more than the standard room in the same hotel. Compare both on Booking for your dates: we do not give a fixed price.

Can you get the river view without sleeping there?

Yes: the Jardim do Morro, the bridges and the Gaia cable car give free or cheap views.

Is it noisy?

The Ribeira is in the evening. To sleep quietly, choose the Gaia heights or a room on the courtyard.
