Your real time in the city

Layover Time in the city (estimate) What you can do
6 h about 2 h São Bento, cathedral, Ribeira
7 h about 3 h + Dom Luís I bridge, lunch
8 h about 4 h + crossing to Gaia or Livraria Lello

Estimate: layover minus 1 h to get out, 2 to 3 h before the flight, and 50 to 60 minutes of metro there and back. If you arrive from a non-Schengen country, checks take longer: see ETIAS and EES in 2026.

Luggage

If your checked bags go through to your final destination, you need do nothing. Otherwise, lockers exist at the airport (level -1, before security) and at São Bento station, or app-based storage at about 5 € per bag per day: see luggage storage in Porto.

Getting to the centre

The metro is simplest: the station is in front of the terminal, purple line E to Trindade, from about 6 am to 1 am. The Z4 ticket costs 2.30 € plus 0.60 € for the Andante card: everything is in airport to the centre and metro tickets and zones. Validate before boarding. With little time or luggage, a private airport-centre transfer or a pre-booked transfer saves waiting; compare cancellation terms.

The return

Take the metro back with at least 30 minutes' margin on top of your calculation; line E is frequent, but a breakdown or crowds can cost time. In case of strikes or disruption, check first: see strikes and disruptions in Portugal.

FAQ

Can you leave the airport with a 5-hour layover? It's tight: about 1 hour in the city at best, often not worth it.

Do I need a visa? Depending on your nationality and where you arrive from; check with your airline and your foreign ministry.

Is there a night bus? Yes, line 3M reaches the Aliados; see the airport-centre page.
