The Andante Azul card costs 0.60 € on top, is valid for one year and can hold trips. If you buy 10 single trips at once, the eleventh is free. For an overview of transport, read Getting around Porto.

Understanding the zones

Zones are counted from the station where you validate: Z2 covers the zones touching the starting one, Z3 adds the next ring, and so on (a guide's explanation, to be confirmed on the network map). For the airport, metro line E from the centre needs a Z4 ticket, i.e. 2.90 € with a new card (2.30 € + 0.60 €). Use the Metro do Porto journey planner or the ticket machine, which lists destinations, to find the exact zone.

Which ticket to choose

  • 1 or 2 trips: a single trip, to the zone of your destination.
  • 4 or more trips in the centre in one day: the Andante 24 in Z2 (5.35 €) pays off from the fourth trip at 1.40 €. It is valid only in the zone bought and from the station of first validation.
  • Tour cards: Andante Tour 1 (24 h, 7.75 €) and Tour 3 (72 h, 16.55 €) cover the metro, STCP buses, trains and regional buses, but not the Guindais funicular or the STCP tram, and cannot be reloaded. Keep them for visitors heading to the suburbs.
  • Porto Card with transport: shown as "from 7.50 €" on the official visitor site; compare it with our calculations in Is the Porto Card worth it.

Buying and validating

Tickets are sold in every station, at the Loja da Mobilidade and from Payshop agents; one guide also mentions a CTT counter at the airport (8:00 to 23:00, to be checked). Validate before entering the platform: there are no gates, but checks are frequent. Validate again when you change line; there is no need to validate on exit. Without a validated ticket the fine can reach about 120 € according to a guide; check with the metro.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Too few zones: a Z2 ticket will not take you to the airport.
  • Loading several zones on one card: a card holds only one type of zone at a time, according to the Andante site.
  • 2025 fares: some sites still show the old table.
