Sea Life Porto, with the park next door

City Park in Porto

Sea Life is at 1ª Rua Particular do Castelo do Queijo, 4100-379 Porto, near the coast. Adult ticket (13 and over) 17.50 €, child aged 3 to 12 12.50 €, family pack of two adults and two children 55 €, free under 3. It is open daily from 10:00 to 19:00 from September to June (last entry 18:00) and from 10:00 to 20:00 in July and August (last entry 19:00). Ask at the desk for the children's quiz card, and go on a weekday morning to avoid the crowd. It is next to City Park, where children can run afterwards: it is the simplest plan for a day. By public transport, take metro line A to Matosinhos Sul, then walk about 10 minutes.

Santo Inácio zoo

The zoo is in Avintes, in Vila Nova de Gaia, about 10 minutes by car from Porto. Adult ticket 18.90 € online (19.90 € at the ticket office), child aged 3 to 12 12.90 € (13.90 €), family of two adults and two children 60.90 € (62.90 €), free up to age 2. Hours: 10:00-17:30 in March and October, 10:00-18:30 from April to September, 10:00-16:30 from November to February; closed on 1 January and on 24 and 25 December. Allow half a day. A car is the simplest way to get there.

Parks and gardens: free and stress-free

Crystal Palace gardens in Porto

The Crystal Palace gardens are free and full of peacocks: an easy stop with children of any age, with gently sloping paths and terraces over the Douro. City Park is bigger, with wide lawns. In both, bring water and a snack.

The tram and the city seen from the river

Vintage tram at the Porto tram museum

Children love trams: the tram museum shows vintage cars in a former power station. The trams in service are narrow and often packed at rush hour: board early. To see the city from the water, the six bridges cruise lasts about an hour, and the Gaia cable car offers a spectacular view.

The beach and rainy days

The beaches of Porto and Matosinhos suit a family outing from June to September; the Atlantic stays cold and currents can be strong: never leave children alone and swim in the supervised areas. On rainy days, see what to do in Porto when it rains, where several museums suit children.

Practical tips with children

  • Stroller: the granite cobbles and the slopes of the Ribeira are rough; a light folding stroller or a baby carrier is more practical.
  • Pace: one big visit a day (Sea Life or the zoo), the rest as strolls and snack breaks.
  • Meals: restaurants welcome children easily; a francesinha can be shared (see where to eat the best francesinha in Porto).
  • Transport: the metro is the simplest way to reach the coast; see transport in Porto.
