Gardens of the Palácio de Cristal in Porto: peacocks, rose garden and views over the Douro

Updated on October 18, 2026

The gardens of the Palácio de Cristal form a large Romantic park west of the centre, with shaded paths, themed gardens and terraces overlooking the Douro. They were designed by the German landscape architect Émile David around a glass-and-iron palace built for the 1865 International Exhibition, the first held on the Iberian Peninsula. The palace was demolished in the early 1950s and replaced by the domed pavilion that locals still call the "Palácio de Cristal". The peacocks roaming freely are the hallmark of the place, and entry is free.

Highlights

The domed pavilion

The domed pavilion

The current building replaces the 1865 glass palace; its dome rises above the gardens. The big blue "Porto" letters in front of the lawn are a very popular photo spot.

The themed gardens

The themed gardens

Flower beds, a rose garden, exotic trees and ponds make up small gardens linked by gravel paths. The peacocks sleep in the trees and cross the paths early and late in the day.

The terraces over the Douro

The western terraces, on the river side, offer a panorama over the Douro, the Arrábida Bridge and the rooftops of Massarelos. It's a good walk at sunset.

The Carlos Alberto chapel and the library

The gardens also contain a small chapel linked to King Charles Albert of Sardinia, who died in exile in Porto in 1849, and the Almeida Garrett municipal library, on the Avenida das Tílias (Lime Tree Avenue).

Tips

  • Entry is free. Opening hours published by a travel guide run from 8:00 to 21:00 from April to September and from 8:00 to 19:00 from October to March: to be confirmed on the Câmara Municipal do Porto website. The Porto Book Fair takes over the park every spring, with bookseller pavilions and a programme of talks: expect more crowds at that time. Nearby, the Romantic Museum at Quinta da Macieirinha makes a good complement.

How to get there

Address: Rua de Dom Manuel II, 4050-346 Porto. The gardens are on a slope: the paths are passable, but the terraces involve some walking.
