| Area | Best for | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Cedofeita and Bolhão | Budget stays with metro and restaurants on foot | Lively in the evening around some streets |
| Upper Baixa | Walking everything from São Bento | Small rooms, street noise possible |
| Campanhã | Budget stays and trains to Lisbon or the Douro | You need the metro or a train to reach the centre |
The traps of a cheap hotel in Porto
- Hills and steps: a hotel "close to the Ribeira" can sit at the top of a steep climb; with a suitcase, check the map and the lift.
- Noise: street-facing rooms near bar streets are loud at weekends; ask for a courtyard room.
- Heat: in old buildings, check for air conditioning in summer.
- Extras: breakfast, tourist tax and luggage are often separate; read the total before paying.
Hotel or hostel?
A hostel is often cheaper per person, but for two people a modest hotel room can cost the same, so compare. See hostel or hotel in Porto and the budget for a trip to Porto.
Three affordable hotels
Facts read on 29 October 2026 from Booking's "cheap hotels" list and Hotels.com; scores and rates change, so check them for your dates.
- Vincci Bonjardim: 4 stars, rated 9.3 out of 10 from 6,128 reviews on Booking, under a kilometre from São Bento station. Limit: Booking showed about 90 dollars for one night and two adults, dearer than a guesthouse.
- Vibrant Host - Campo 24 Agosto: Bonfim district, near the Coliseu, rated 9.1 from 1,063 reviews, shown from about 62 dollars a night. Limit: Bonfim lies east of the centre, so expect the metro or an uphill walk.
- Hotel Estoril Porto: Rua de Cedofeita 193, 1 star, 8.4 out of 10 from 173 reviews on Hotels.com. Limit: modest category, check the room size.
