How much is a cheap lunch in Porto? Between 7 and 12 € for a full prato do dia in a tasca, according to the guides we read.
Where to look
Tascas are simple neighbourhood places. A guide to Porto's tascas names several: Adega do Quim and Adega Viseu near São Bento (bifanas, sandwiches, cod), Conga (spicy bifanas, Rua do Bonjardim), A Viela in Campanhã (feijoada, about 6 € for a full meal according to the article), and the temporary Bolhão market (see the Bolhão market). The same guides advise avoiding the Ribeira and Rua das Flores, where prices are highest, and looking around Bonfim.
What to order
- Francesinha: read the best francesinha in Porto; it is a meal in itself.
- Bifana: marinated pork sandwich, the classic cheap meal.
- Bacalhau: see the cod dishes, often the dish of the day.
- Pastries: Porto's pastelarias for a low-cost breakfast.
Traps to avoid
- The cover charge: bread, butter and olives placed on the table are charged if you touch them.
- Tourist menus in the Ribeira, which cost more.
- Tipping is not required in a tasca; rounding up or leaving 1 to 2 € is appreciated.
To taste more in one go
If you want a guided first meal, a 3-hour food tour packs several tastings together. For the rest of the budget, see the cost of a trip to Porto.
