The markets at a glance

The Bolhão, the market to see

Renovated from 2018 to 2022, the Bolhão market reopened on 15 September 2022. It sells fruit, vegetables, fish, cheeses, cured meats and flowers, plus restaurants that open later than the stalls. Entry is free; come on a weekday morning. For more detail, read our page Bolhão market.

Eating in a market

Market-restaurants gather several counters under one roof: they suit a group where everyone wants something different. They are more touristy and pricier than small neighbourhood restaurants, and busy at mealtimes. For a guided visit with tastings around the Bolhão, see also Food tour in Porto: which offer.

Matosinhos fish

Matosinhos is the fishing port of the urban area. The market sells fresh fish in the morning, and the grill restaurants of the nearby streets cook the fish you choose. Go in the morning for the market and have lunch in the area; take the metro from Porto (see Transport in Porto).

Flea markets

On Saturday mornings a flea market gathers bric-a-brac and curiosities; its place and hours have changed several times: ask the tourist office before going. For galleries and concept stores, see Cedofeita and Miguel Bombarda.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Quiet hours: many stalls close on Saturday afternoon and Sunday; check before going.
  • Market-restaurant prices: compare before ordering.
  • "Souvenir" products: tinned fish and wine are everywhere; compare prices before buying.

Which option to choose?

  • One market only: the Bolhão, on a weekday morning.
  • Lunch with a group: a market-restaurant.
  • Fresh fish: Matosinhos, in the morning.
  • A guided visit with tastings: a food tour around the Bolhão.
