What is Queima das Fitas? A week of celebrations by the University of Porto's students: parade, Mass, concerts and parties. The "fitas" are the ribbons of each faculty, burned symbolically at the end of studies.
The parade: the moment to watch
The academic parade is what a visitor can see without a ticket: floats and students in traditional dress head down to Avenida dos Aliados. Traffic is closed along the route; take the metro (see metro zones and tickets).
The concerts at the Queimódromo
The site has three stages (Palco Academia, Palco Martini for electronic and urban music, Palco Cultura for comedy). Entry prices were not in the sources we read: ask the Federação Académica do Porto, the organiser. For the trip home, STCP ran two free direct shuttles in 2026 (from Trindade and from São João hospital), 10 pm to 3 am outbound and 2 am to 7 am back, at least every 15 minutes.
Where to stay
The week fills accommodation near the centre and the metro line: book months ahead, and pick a quiet district if you are not coming for the party. Our guide to where to stay in Porto compares the areas.
Good to know
- It is a student festival, loud and with a lot of drinking: avoid it if you want quiet.
- The 2026 security operation was announced at more than 500 people a day, with 12 watchtowers and 100 cameras.
- For the rest of the month, see Porto in May and Porto festivals 2026-27.
