Where can you eat seafood near Porto? In Matosinhos, around the municipal market and the neighbouring restaurant streets.
The market and the restaurant streets
The Matosinhos municipal market sells fresh fish and seafood; the restaurants around it serve what comes off the boats. Rua Heróis de França and the neighbouring streets concentrate fish restaurants: the choice is wide, so pick one where the customers are local and the fish is on display.
How to order without surprises
- Price per kilo: fish and shellfish are often charged by weight: ask for the price per kilo and the approximate weight before the piece is brought to you.
- The couvert: starters placed on the table (bread, cheese, olives) are charged if you take them.
- Seafood rice: a dish for two, soupy, closer to a risotto than a paella.
- Sardines: in season, grilled whole, with potatoes and salad; summer is the time.
Combine it with the beach
Matosinhos has its own urban beach: see Porto and Matosinhos beaches. For cod, the other great classic, see cod in Porto. To taste several dishes without guessing, a compared food tour is the simplest option.
Going further
Restaurant prices are not given here: they change with the fish of the day. See also the Bom Sucesso market for another market in the city.
