How many public holidays does Portugal have? Thirteen national holidays, including Easter and Good Friday, whose dates change every year.
Porto: 24 June, St John
St John's night is the big moment of the year in Porto: on the night of 23 to 24 June the city celebrates in the streets (see our page St John's festival in Porto). 24 June is a holiday in Porto only: Wednesday in 2026, Thursday in 2027 (calendar calculation; a single source lists it for 2026). Book your accommodation very early if you want to be there.
What changes for a visitor
- Museums and monuments: many close or shorten their hours on 1 January, Easter Sunday, 1 May and 25 December; check each site's own page (we did not collect these closures place by place).
- Transport: services often run on a Sunday or holiday timetable; see Transport in Porto and check cp.pt for trains.
- Shops and markets: the Bolhão is already closed on Sundays, so a weekday holiday may close it too; see Bolhão Market.
- Restaurants: popular places fill up on the eve of long weekends.
The long weekends to know
The most useful long weekends fall when a holiday lands on a Monday or a Friday: in 2026, 1 May (Friday), 3 April (Good Friday) and 25 December (Friday) make three-day weekends; in 2027, 26 March, 1 November (Monday) and 1 January (Friday). The Portuguese travel on those days: trains, hotels and beaches fill up.
Which date to choose?
- To enjoy the festival: 23-24 June, booked very early.
- For a calmer Porto: avoid 1 May and Good Friday if you rely on full opening hours.
- For museums: pick an ordinary day and check closures on 1 January and 25 December.
