Getting from Porto to Serra da Estrela
- By car: about 3 hours (estimate) by motorway toward Viseu, then Covilhã or Manteigas. A car is useful: the sights are far apart.
- By bus: FlixBus opened a direct Porto (Campanhã and airport) - Viseu - Covilhã line in June 2026, in a little over 3 h 15 to 3 h 30, with fares advertised from about 5 EUR; times vary, so check FlixBus. From Covilhã you then need a taxi or local bus to Manteigas.
- As a day trip: very long from Porto. A night on the spot is better.
What not to miss
| Sight | Why go |
|---|---|
| Torre (1,993 m) | Highest point of mainland Portugal; you can drive up, views into Spain on a clear day; a 7 m stone tower brings the height to 2,000 m |
| Zêzere glacial valley | About 13 km from Torre to Manteigas, N338 road with viewpoints and a waymarked trail |
| Poço do Inferno | About 10 m waterfall in a gorge, 2.5 km loop, best in spring |
| Manteigas | Best base for trails; Burel wool factory |
| Covilhã | Town at the foot of the range, restaurants and shops |
| Linhares da Beira | Medieval village, 12th-century castle, paragliding |
The mountain cheese
Queijo da Serra is a protected sheep's cheese curdled with thistle flower: you cut off the top rind and spoon it onto bread. A whole wheel costs about 20 to 30 EUR according to one guide; buy from producers in Manteigas or Seia rather than at Torre, which is dearer.
Season and snow
It usually snows from December to March. Torre's ski area is small, mostly for beginners (a day pass around 35 EUR in 2026 according to one guide). Weekends are very busy. In winter snow chains may be required and police can close the upper roads; weather can change within minutes.
One day or one night?
- One day: too short from Porto by bus; possible by car: Torre, the Zêzere valley, lunch in Manteigas.
- One night: Manteigas for trails, Covilhã for services; book early in high season (a quality room costs about 120 to 180 EUR according to one guide). Our offer below targets stays in the Serra.
- To make the drive more of a trip: Viseu and the Dão from Porto lies on the way.
