Shoes: the real issue
Porto's streets are cobbled, often steep, and slippery in the rain. Bring sneakers or walking shoes with a grippy sole rather than smooth soles or heels. Crossing the Dom Luís I bridge or climbing to the Sé means a lot of walking: outside summer, two pairs that can dry in turn are a good idea.
Weather month by month
January is the coolest month (5 to 14 C on average) and August the warmest (16 to 26 C). The driest months are July (20 mm) and August (33 mm); the wettest are December (181 mm), November (172 mm) and October (158 mm). The Atlantic stays cool all year, around 16 C on average: a swimsuit is enough for the beach in summer, a wetsuit only for surfing. Power, connection and small extras
Portugal uses type C and F plugs at 230 V: see plugs and voltage in Porto. To stay connected without roaming fees, look at our Portugal eSIM page. Add a water bottle, a small anti-theft pouch for tourist areas and a foldable bag for shopping; if rain sets in, our page on Porto on a rainy day suggests indoor plans.
