What to see in Braga: cathedral, historic centre and gardens (guide from Porto)

Updated on October 24, 2026

Braga, about 50 km north of Porto, is a Roman city that became the country's great religious centre: a Romanesque cathedral, baroque churches on almost every corner and a pleasant pedestrian centre. The train from Porto takes about 1 hr to 1 hr 20 depending on the service; one day covers the centre, plus half a day more if you go up to Bom Jesus do Monte. The centre is a 3 to 4 hour walk: cathedral (Sé), Santa Bárbara garden, Arco da Porta Nova, pedestrian streets and lunch. The cathedral is visited by paid zones (around 2 € for the nave and chapels, 3 € for the treasury according to a guide consulted in October 2026, to be confirmed on site).

Highlights

The cathedral (Sé)

The cathedral (Sé)

The country's oldest cathedral, begun in the late 11th century and reworked over the centuries, mixing Romanesque, Gothic and baroque. The treasury museum and the upper choir are separate visits.

Bom Jesus do Monte

Bom Jesus do Monte

The sanctuary and its zigzag baroque stairway, on the hill east of the centre, a UNESCO site; the 1882 funicular runs on a water counterweight. Read our page Braga and Bom Jesus from Porto.

The Santa Bárbara garden

A free public garden, with flower beds in front of the former bishop's palace: an easy break between two monuments.

The pedestrian centre

Rua do Souto and the neighbouring streets hold shops, pastry shops and terraces; do not miss the Arco da Porta Nova, the old city gate.

Practical info

Tips

  • The cathedral prices come from a travel blog and must be confirmed at the ticket desk; neither the opening hours nor the funicular fare could be checked in October 2026. To combine Braga and Guimarães in one day without driving, a group excursion is the simplest solution; see also our page Guimarães from Porto. During Holy Week Braga is very busy: book the train and your accommodation.

How to get there

Train from Porto São Bento or Campanhã to Braga station, about 1 hr to 1 hr 20 depending on the service; the station is a 10 to 15 minute walk from the historic centre. By car, allow about 45 minutes on the motorway.

Opening hours

Best: Weekday mornings
Depends on the season, to be confirmed on site (cathedral: separate paid zones; Santa Bárbara garden free to enter)
