Barcelos from Porto: the rooster, the Thursday market and the pottery

Updated on October 24, 2026

Barcelos, about 50 km north of Porto, is the home of the Barcelos rooster, now Portugal's tourist emblem. Its big market is held on Thursday mornings on the Campo da República (Campo da Feira): that is the best day to go. The train from Porto takes about 1 hr to 1 hr 15 depending on the service (times to be confirmed on the CP website). The town takes half a day: centre, medieval bridge over the Cávado, ruins of the counts' palace, church and pottery shops. No museum hours or prices could be checked in October 2026: the market and the streets are free.

Highlights

The Barcelos rooster

The Barcelos rooster

According to the legend, a pilgrim on the way to Santiago de Compostela, wrongly accused of theft, proves his innocence when a roast rooster crows on the judge's table. Versions vary, but the colourful ceramic rooster is everywhere, and it is the most popular souvenir.

The Thursday market

The Thursday market

On the Campo da República, with crafts, pottery, textiles and fresh produce: one of the largest open-air markets in northern Portugal, according to several guides. Come early.

The pottery

Barcelos is a centre of folk ceramics; look for a signed rooster or figurines rather than mass-produced copies, and ask the price before buying.

The centre and the river

The medieval bridge over the Cávado and the ruins of the counts' palace make a quiet one-hour walk.
