Esposende from Porto: Ofir beaches, Apúlia windmills and the Cávado estuary
Esposende is a small seaside town on the north coast, about 50 km from Porto, at the mouth of the Cávado. Around it: the beaches and pine forest of Ofir and Fão, the Apúlia windmills and a protected natural coastline. There is no train to Esposende: you go by bus from Porto (about 1 hr to 1 hr 20, times to be confirmed with the operators) or by car. It is a nature and beach outing rather than a monument visit: allow a day in summer, half a day the rest of the year. The transport information comes from secondary guides consulted in October 2026 and is to be confirmed.
Highlights

Esposende town centre
A small town of quiet streets around an old pillory (pelourinho), with cafés and a walk along the estuary. For a break, not for a long visit.
Ofir and Fão
Across the estuary, long sandy beaches lined with a pine forest and wooden walkways; the Atlantic water stays cold, and the wind draws kitesurfers and windsurfers.
The Apúlia windmills
A few traditional windmills and a lightly built coast that is part of the northern coast nature park; a good goal for a bike ride or a drive.
The Cávado
The estuary is a nature and bird site; walk its banks rather than looking for a monument.

Tips
- Without a car, logistics are heavier than for Vila do Conde or Póvoa, which are reached by metro: see Vila do Conde and Póvoa de Varzim. Combine with Viana do Castelo and Ponte de Lima if you have a car. Bring a windbreaker, even in summer.
How to get there
Bus from Porto (about 1 hr to 1 hr 20; times to be confirmed), or car (about 45 minutes). The train stops at Póvoa de Varzim, about 20 km away: you then need a bus.
