Évora from Porto: distance, train, bus and is it a day trip?

Updated on October 26, 2026

Évora, in the heart of the Alentejo, is about 400 km from Porto: allow about 4 hours by car. There is no direct train; by rail you must go via Lisbon (secondary sources, October 2026: the whole trip takes 5 to 6 hours or more) and the long-distance bus also takes over 5 hours according to sources. So it is not a realistic day trip from Porto: plan at least one night there, or go from Lisbon if you are passing through. The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Highlights

The Roman temple

The Roman temple

The Corinthian columns of a 1st-century temple, the city's symbol, on the square next to the cathedral.

The Chapel of Bones

A chapel decorated with human bones, inside the Church of St Francis, one of Portugal's most startling sights.

The cathedral and historic centre

White streets, azulejo walls and an old university, best explored on foot.

Alentejo wines and food

Évora is a good base for tasting the region's wines and black pork.

Tips

  • If your trip passes through Lisbon, do Évora from Lisbon: the choice of excursions there is wide (see Lisbon from Porto: train or tour). From Porto it is better to pick a closer destination such as Coimbra or Aveiro. Train and bus times are not confirmed: check cp.pt and the bus companies' websites (October 2026).

How to get there

By car, about 400 km (about 4 h); by train via Lisbon; by long-distance bus (over 5 h according to sources). For a guided tour, go from Lisbon instead.
