Christmas and New Year in Porto: lights, markets and fireworks
In Porto, Christmas is lived mostly in the street: the Avenida dos Aliados has a large tree and concerts, garlands light up the centre and Christmas markets pop up around town. On 31 December the party centres on the Aliados, with fireworks at midnight. The 2026 programme had not been announced in October 2026: the information below is based on the 2025 edition and is a guide only, to be confirmed on the City of Porto's agenda.
Highlights

The Christmas lights
In 2025 the switch-on took place on 29 November and the lights stayed on until 6 January, from 5:30pm to 11pm (until midnight at weekends). New spots had been added, including Rua Cândido dos Reis and the Cais da Ribeira.
The Aliados tree and concerts
The grand avenue hosts a tree and concerts, especially around the switch-on. It is pleasant even if you buy nothing: see our page on the Avenida dos Aliados.
The Christmas markets
In 2025 one market ran at Praça da Batalha until 29 December and another at the Cordoaria from 29 November to 3 January. 2026 dates not confirmed.

New Year at the Aliados
For New Year's Eve 2025-2026 the avenue was closed to traffic from 7pm to 7am, with fireworks at midnight and two concert stages (Aliados and Palácio de Cristal). Arrive early to find room.
Bolo-rei
This ring-shaped cake with candied fruit, typical of the season, is sold in the centre's pastry shops over the holidays.
