Igreja da Lapa in Porto: Dom Pedro IV's heart, visit and opening hours
The Igreja da Lapa is a neoclassical church in central Porto (Largo da Lapa), famous because its mausoleum holds the heart of Dom Pedro IV, King of Portugal and first Emperor of Brazil (Pedro I), who bequeathed it to the city. The heart is not on permanent display: it has only been shown exceptionally, notably in August 2022 before a trip to Brazil, then during openings of a few days. No current opening hours could be confirmed on 26 October 2026: check with the Lapa brotherhood or Porto city hall before you go.
Highlights

The facade and its two towers
A neoclassical facade with two bell towers rising over the square: the church can be seen from outside in a few minutes.
The mausoleum with Dom Pedro IV's heart
The heart is kept inside; seeing it depends on the exceptional openings announced by the brotherhood.
The interior
If the church is open, the interior takes only a short visit; it is a stop of a few minutes rather than an hour.

Tips
- This is a short stop, best combined with a walk around the area: see Avenida dos Aliados and Café Majestic. To understand the city's history and monuments with a guide, a walking tour of Porto remains the simplest option. Do not plan on seeing the heart itself without first checking that an opening has been announced.
How to get there
On foot from the Aliados or São Bento station (15 to 20 minutes), or by metro to Trindade station and then on foot.
