Póvoa de Varzim from Porto: beach, casino and old fishing quarter (by metro)
Póvoa de Varzim is a seaside resort about 30 km north of Porto, with a big sandy beach, a seafront promenade, a casino and an old fishermen's quarter. It is the terminus of Porto metro line B: allow about 1 hour from the centre by metro (times and Andante fare to be confirmed on the Metro do Porto website). It is an easy beach outing for a summer day, or an Atlantic seafront walk the rest of the year. No monument hours could be checked in October 2026.
Highlights

The beach and the promenade
A long beach of sand and rocks facing the Atlantic, with a promenade lined with cafés and restaurants. The water is cool, even in summer: swimming is mostly for the brave, and the wind can pick up.
The fishermen's quarter
Around the fishing harbour and the fish market, narrow streets and taverns serve grilled fish and caldeirada; it is the best place for lunch.
The casino and the town
The Póvoa casino is one of the country's big casinos; the central square and its pedestrian streets are lively in the evening.
A stop with Vila do Conde
The two towns are on the same line: see Vila do Conde.
