Santa Clara Church in Porto: visit, hours, ticket and what you see (2026)
Santa Clara church, in Porto's historic centre, is famous for an interior entirely covered in gilded woodcarving (talha dourada) and azulejos: one of the richest baroque interiors in the city, a national monument since 1910. An unofficial guide gives 5 € for entry (3 € reduced, free under 10); we found no up-to-date official hours, and the church has had restoration work on its gilded woodwork: check before you go.
Highlights

The gilded woodwork
Walls and vault are covered with gilded carving, from nave to choir: this is what you come for, and it is very photogenic.
The azulejos and the Gothic façade
Behind the plain 15th-century exterior, the walls are decorated with blue and white tiles.
The convent
The church was part of a convent of Poor Clares; part of the site keeps that enclosed feel.

Tips
- Combine it with the other gilded churches in the centre: São Francisco church is the largest, and the cathedral is a few minutes away. An unofficial guide says that on Tuesdays and Saturdays the visit stops around 5 pm because of a 6 pm mass (to be checked). Allow 20 to 30 minutes. A guided walking tour of the historic centre often includes the nearby churches (see the offer below).
How to get there
On foot from São Bento station or Rua das Flores (under 10 minutes). No useful metro: the historic centre is done on foot.
