Teatro Nacional São João in Porto: programme, tickets and tour
The Teatro Nacional São João (TNSJ) is Porto's main theatre, on Praça da Batalha at the top of the Baixa. Its programme changes every month: theatre, dance, music and children's shows, often with English surtitles. Tickets are sold on the official site tnsj.pt or at the theatre box office. The current Italian-style building was rebuilt after the 1908 fire that destroyed the earlier Real Teatro de São João (1798). You can also visit it without a show: the guided tour of the theatre is advertised Tuesday to Saturday at 12:30 for €10 per person, to be confirmed on the official site.
Highlights

The façade and the Italian-style hall
A stone and pink-brick façade on Praça da Batalha; inside, a hall with balconies and boxes, typical of early 20th-century theatres.
A show rather than a simple visit
The best way to see the hall is to attend a play, concert or ballet; check the season on the official site and whether English surtitles are offered.
The sister venues
The TNSJ also runs the Teatro Carlos Alberto (another central hall) and the Mosteiro de São Bento da Vitória, a large 17th–18th-century monastery used for new productions. Guided visits to the monastery were suspended when we checked.

Tips
- We do not publish show dates or prices: they change every month, so use the official box office and avoid resellers. The guided tour (about €10, Tuesday to Saturday 12:30 according to the official site in October 2026) is booked online or 30 minutes before the start, in a small group; confirm before you go. Combine it with Rua das Flores, São Bento station and the Avenida dos Aliados, all a few minutes' walk away. For another big hall, see the Coliseu do Porto and the Casa da Música. To sleep nearby, see where to stay in Porto.
How to get there
