Vila do Conde from Porto: monastery, aqueduct and lace (by metro)
Vila do Conde is a small fishing and shipbuilding town at the mouth of the Ave, about 30 km north of Porto. The simplest way is the Porto metro, line B (red) towards Póvoa de Varzim: allow about 50 minutes from the centre (times and Andante fare to be confirmed on the Metro do Porto website). Half a day is enough: the Santa Clara monastery and its aqueduct, the old town, bobbin lace and the beach. No monument hours or prices could be checked in October 2026.
Highlights

The aqueduct and the Santa Clara monastery
A long arched stone aqueduct, built in the 18th century to supply the monastery, which overlooks the town. It is Vila do Conde's signature photo.
Bobbin lace
The town is known for its rendas de bilros: the tradition is shown in a dedicated school and museum, to be confirmed on site.
The centre and the river
The old town of narrow lanes along the Ave, and the shipyard district, where a replica 16th-century caravel is displayed.
The beach
The town has several sandy beaches a few minutes from the centre; the water stays cool, even in summer.
