Pet-friendly hotels: fees found

Papers to enter Portugal

From another EU country, the EU pet passport is enough if it shows the microchip and a valid rabies vaccination; the chip must be implanted before the vaccine. From outside the EU, you also need an official health certificate, and the sources we read mention advance notification before arrival and entry through the Lisbon or Porto airports. These rules change: check with the DGAV, the Portuguese veterinary authority, or your vet before booking.

Flying, driving and getting around

Airlines do not all follow the same policy: some accept small pets in the cabin in a bag with a maximum weight, others only assistance dogs. Ask the airline before buying your ticket. To reach the centre from the airport, see our Porto airport page and the one on taxis and ride-hailing in Porto, and ask the driver whether pets are accepted. We found no clear published rule for the metro and buses: ask the operator.

Choosing where to stay

Always state the animal (species, weight) when booking and get the fee confirmed in writing. Porto's hills are steep and the cobbles hot in summer: a neighbourhood with gardens nearby, such as around the Palácio de Cristal, is more pleasant.
