Quinta da Macieirinha: Porto's Romantic Museum and its gardens above the Douro
The Romantic Museum (Museu Romântico) occupies the Quinta da Macieirinha, also known as Quinta do Sacramento, an 18th-century country house that belonged to the Pinto Basto family. Opened in 1972, it presents the interior of a 19th-century bourgeois home in Porto: drawing rooms, dining room, bedrooms, period furniture and objects. It was here that King Charles Albert of Sardinia, Prince of Piedmont, died in exile on 28 July 1849. After works led by architect Camilo Rebelo, the museum reopened in 2017. The terraced gardens run down towards the river.
Highlights

The dining room
A laid table, chandelier, china and silverware: the room recreates a 19th-century bourgeois dinner and gives a good sense of the atmosphere of the house.
The drawing rooms and bedrooms
Period furniture, paintings and objects tell the daily life of a well-off Porto family in the Romantic era. Part of the house commemorates Charles Albert of Sardinia, who died here in exile.
The gardens
The quinta's terraced gardens run down towards the Douro. It's a quiet place to end the visit, and the neighbouring Palácio de Cristal park is within walking distance.

The visit is short: allow 45 minutes to 1 hour, plus the garden. To combine, pair it with the gardens of the Palácio de Cristal, nearby.
