Works: buses from 3 November 2026 to 24 March 2027

CP's notice of 14 October 2026 says trains between Marco de Canaveses and Régua are suspended from 3 November 2026 to 24 March 2027 for modernisation. Direct buses run between Caíde and Régua, and other buses stop at all stations from Marco de Canaveses to Régua. Bicycles, scooters and wheelchairs are not carried on the replacement service, and times can vary with traffic and weather. If you travel in this window, allow extra time or choose a day tour from Porto.

The best stretch and where to sit

The most scenic section is Régua to Pinhão, where the river narrows between terraced vineyards and the train runs close to the water. Heading east from Porto, sit on the right for the river; on the return, sit on the left.

Stops worth knowing

  • Régua: largest town on the line, the Museu do Douro and river cruises; see Peso da Régua.
  • Pinhão: heart of the port wine region; the 1937 station has 24 azulejo panels by Jorge Colaço; see Pinhão.
  • Tua: junction village at the meeting of the Tua and Douro rivers.
  • Pocinho: end of the line; the Côa Valley rock art is a few kilometres south, and a car helps.

Day trip by train or a cruise?

By train you can reach Pinhão in about 2 h 20 and return the same evening, but the days are long: a guide suggests the 09:25 from São Bento and returning from Régua, where services are more frequent. Book tastings at the quintas ahead, as walk-ins can be refused. If you want river, tasting and lunch in one day with no timetable to watch, the tour in our offer below combines a winery lunch, tastings and a cruise. For the whole valley, read the Douro Valley guide and the Douro river cruise.
