Pinhão in the Douro Valley: train from Porto, the azulejo station, quintas
Pinhão is the key village of the Douro Valley, in the heart of the port vineyards. You go there by train from Porto São Bento in about 2 hr 20 to 2 hr 30 (5 or 6 trains a day, single fare between 12 and 17 EUR depending on the source), by car on the A4, the A24 and then the N222, or on a guided excursion. A day trip is possible but tight: the last train back leaves around 6 pm. Sleeping there lets you enjoy the quintas.
Highlights

The village and its quintas
Pinhão sits by the river, surrounded by terraced vineyards; several nearby quintas offer visits and tastings, often by reservation.
The azulejo station
The station's tile panels date from 1937 according to one source; they won the SOS Azulejo award in 2013 for their restoration according to Wikipedia. Arrive by train to see them in passing.
The quays and the cruises
Douro cruises leave from Pinhão; you can also simply walk along the water. Prices and times not collected: ask on site.
The N222 viewpoints
The road between Régua and Pinhão (about 27 km) passes well-known viewpoints; see the self-drive itinerary.

Tips
- For a day without a car, two options: the train (the most beautiful ride, but you must book quintas and lunch separately) or the excursion with cruise, lunch and tasting, which removes the logistics. Do not drive after a tasting. To sleep: Where to stay in the Douro valley. Train times and fare are to be confirmed on cp.pt; we did not collect quinta prices.
