Fewer hills, more pleasure
| Need | Solution |
|---|---|
| See the old town without climbing | Guided tuk-tuk, 1 to 2 hours |
| Follow the river without effort | Historic tram along the Douro (line 1) |
| Cross the river | Low deck of the Dom Luís I bridge, flat, or the metro |
| Rest between visits | Cafés and the Crystal Palace gardens |
A slow pace over three days
Day 1: flat Ribeira, the low bridge deck and the Gaia cellars by water taxi or cable car rather than on foot. Day 2: tuk-tuk in the morning, São Bento station and its azulejos, a quiet lunch in Aliados. Day 3: the Crystal Palace gardens or a seated Douro cruise. See tram line 1 and getting around Porto for timetables and tickets; compare the tuk-tuk with a walking tour in tuk-tuk or guided tour.
Where to sleep on the flat
Baixa and Aliados are close to São Bento and the metro, with little slope: see hotels in Baixa and Aliados. Boavista and Foz are flatter and quieter: see hotels in Boavista and Foz. Ask for a lift and a room without steps, as many old buildings have none.
FAQ
Are the cobbles dangerous? They are slippery in the rain: bring non-slip soles and a cane or poles if needed.
Is the metro accessible? Stations have lifts; confirm the one you need on the metro website.
Which season? Spring and early autumn, with mild temperatures.
