The story of a city market
The fair began in the Sé district in the 1970s, when young people sold second-hand books, records and clothes at low prices. Porto city council took over its regulation in 1984. The tourist board calls it an icon of the city. The setting has changed: it has moved several times, and the current site was built for large fairs. Do not expect the Douro view of the old site any more.
What to look for
Bric-a-brac, books, records, clothes and second-hand goods. Come early: the best pieces go quickly and the market closes at 13:00. Bring cash in small notes, haggle politely and watch your pockets, as in any crowd.
Getting there
Take metro line F to Nasoni station (see Porto metro tickets and zones for tickets). An older guide mentioned a 10-minute walk from Estádio do Dragão for the former site: do not rely on it.
Pitfalls to avoid
- Sundays: nothing is planned; see Porto on Sundays.
- Old addresses: check with the tourist office that the location has not changed again before you go.
- Weather: the market is outdoors; if it rains, choose a covered market.
Which option to choose?
- Browsing on a Saturday morning: the Vandoma.
- A covered market, every day but Sunday: the Bolhão; for the full comparison, see Porto's markets.
- Tasting without browsing: a food tour around the Bolhão.
- Lasting souvenirs: see souvenirs from Portugal.
