The twelve places in one table

Gardens and lanes

Passeio das Virtudes is a west-facing terraced garden above the river: a travel guide describes it as a sunset spot with free access. Sources disagree on opening hours (until 6 or 7 pm depending on the season for one, open all day for another): go in the late afternoon. It is no longer quite secret, but far less crowded than Jardim do Morro (see sunset in Porto). On Rua da Bainharia, near the cathedral, the Domus Arte workshop (number 135) runs the city's most booked pastel de nata class: see cooking classes in Porto.

Houses and churches

The Casa-Museu Guerra Junqueiro and the Romantic Museum are two quiet house museums, 45 minutes each. The Santa Clara church hides a gilded-wood interior; the Carmo church, with its 1912 azulejo wall, stands next to the Casa Escondida, a one-metre-wide house: see the Carmo church.

The river and the coast

At Massarelos, between quays and gardens, allow an hour with the tram museum. The Freixo palace is a hotel: you mostly see it from the river or by lunching there. Across the river, the Serra do Pilar gives a full view from its esplanade. To the west, the Foz fort and the Leça pools (summer only, 9 am to 7 pm).

With a local guide

If you prefer to discover these districts with someone, there is a walking tour with a local guide; compare price, length and cancellation before booking.
